LVDT Intrinsic Temperature Measurement: Revolutionizing Precision Sensing

The LVDT Intrinsic Temperature Measurement improves accuracy in material test reactors by directly sensing internal temperatures, providing precise results in medical and aerospace applications.

Overview:

Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) are essential sensors in global material test reactors. They measure vital parameters in the extreme conditions of irradiation tests. Traditionally, these tests used LVDTs in conjunction with thermocouples to measure temperature. However, this setup couldn't accurately measure the internal temperature of the LVDT. This gap, combined with the limited supply from IFE, highlights the market's urgent need for improved temperature precision in sensitive environments. The demand for accurate and reliable sensors continuously grows with healthcare, aerospace, and research applications. This underscores a significant opportunity in sectors where precision is crucial.

Description:

The LVDT Intrinsic Temperature Measurement method innovates by using the LVDT's coils to measure temperature, eliminating the need for external thermocouples directly. This breakthrough enables precise and real-time temperature data from within the LVDT body, greatly enhancing measurement accuracy in irradiation tests and other applications. Additionally, this method simplifies sensor assembly and improves performance in environments where traditional LVDTs struggle with thermal variations.

Benefits:

  • Direct Temperature Sensing: Provides precise internal temperature readings, increasing measurement accuracy.

  • Eliminates External Compensation: Reduces complexity and potential inaccuracies by removing the need for additional temperature compensation equipment.

  • Improved Accuracy in Extreme Conditions: Ensures reliable performance in high-temperature and gamma heating scenarios, essential for critical applications.

  • Long-term Stability: Maintaining consistent and accurate data over extended periods is vital for long-duration irradiation tests and other sensitive applications.

Applications:

  • Medical Equipment: Ensures precise positioning in LINAC systems for cancer treatments.

  • Manufacturing: Guarantees accurate measurements in the automotive and aerospace industries.

  • Aerospace: Maintains measurement accuracy in flight control systems under extreme conditions.

  • Research and Development: Offers reliable data in lab environments with fluctuating temperatures.

  • Military Applications: Ensures precision in weapon systems across various climates.

Development Status:

TRL 4 – Validated in a laboratory environment.

IP Status:

US Provisional Patent Application No. 63/549,266, “LVDT Intrinsic Temperature Measurement,” BEA Docket No. BA-1553.
