LOCATION: ALGONAC
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Parks & Recreation Division, Stewardship Unit is requesting bids for control of the following invasive shrubs and trees. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus), common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata), non-native honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.), bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculata),and other invasive plants will be targeted in remnants of native marsh, prairie, prairie fen, oak barrens, and other natural communities at eight (8) state park and recreation area facilities. They are Algonac SP, Belle Isle Park, Brighton RA, Fort Custer RA, Highland RA, Island Lake RA, Waterloo RA, and Watkins Lake SP. Large portions of these facilities are in the process of being restored to high quality native natural communities. The landscapes will be representative of the wetlands, prairies, grasslands, barrens, and woodlands that were common in southern Michigan prior to widespread European settlement.
The general goal of this project is to control specific invasive plants in targeted areas of the parks listed above. This work will be accomplished by a combination various herbicide treatments depending on treatment zone, species, size class and time of year. For the majority of zones (60%), this will be a follow-up to treatments that occurred in the last five years. About 40% of the zones are first time chemical treatments, but are follow up to prescribed fire, land clearing or some other management activity.
