ADDENDUM #1
See below notes based on questions received to date, attached updated spec section and bulletin
drawing. This Addendum is considered a part of the Contract Documents and plans. Bidders shall
review the Addendum and incorporate the modified requirements in their proposals. It is the Contractor’s
responsibility to assure that all changes and/or additions noted in the Addendum are included in the bid.
Prime Contractors are responsible for assuring that their subcontractors and suppliers have received the
information in all Addenda.
1. Confirm whether the existing star logo is to be replaced with new stamped concrete.
The star will not be replaced in the concrete. The new concrete is not stamped or
stained.
2. Should be removed sub-stone base materials during demolition of the stamped concrete.
If the existing stone base is disturbed during construction then it shall be
replaced per detail 2/G0.2.
3. Existing Ramp to remain at Rest area building as shown on drawings G0.2 currently stamped
concrete. The new stamped concrete will not match, please advise.
The existing ramp to remain in order not to disturb the stone walls. The new
concrete is not stamped or stained.
4. Do we have any grading work required as a part of this project?
The fine grading as required for the scope of work shown only. Any disturbance
of grade for work to be completed shall be repaired.
5. Confirm if there is a landscaping allowance included for the work areas surrounding the buildings.
Landscaping is not included in this project other than reseeding any lawn
disturbed during construction
6. Confirm whether temporary construction fencing around the work area is required to be
included or not.
No defined fencing is required to be included in the contract. However, there will
be a limited area of work determined onsite with the engineer and the GC is
responsible for securing the site and work area. DOT forces will barricade the
entrances from the interstate to limit traffic as needed.
7. On the site layout drawings, the note indicates to replace railing. However, it is not specified
whether the existing railing should be reused and reinstalled or if a completely new railing is to be
provided. Please confirm whether the new railing needs to meet ADA complaints.
New railing to be provided to replace existing and it shall meet ADA. See attached
bulletin drawing for further clarification
8. Provide the specifications for the flooring products indicated in the drawings, including LVT,
rubber base, and carpet tile for welcome center
There is no LVT or rubber base listed in the finish schedule for the Welcome
Center. The floor tile in the Welcome Center airlock and foyer is to be the same as
the floor tile in the rest area building. The carpet tile in the Welcome Center is
new. If damaged during construction, it should be replaced in kind.
9. Please confirm if any new attic access panels are required buildings. As two existing attic access
panels were observed in the drawings.
Yes, please replace the attic access panels in the rest area building only. See
attached bulletin drawing for detail.
10. Needing clarification on insulated glass. Are both Lites to be laminated? Or 1 lite laminated and 1
lite tempered or Both Lites tempered.
All glass to meet safety glazing requirements of NCSBC section 2406. Where
safety glazing is required per this code section, it may be either laminated or
tempered.
11. Obscure glass in bathroom windows 1 lite obscure and 1 lite laminated or 1 lite obscure and 1 lite
tempered
Both panes to be safety glazing if required by section 2406 of NCSBC. Only the
interior pane has to be obsure.
12. Need spec on resin panel at storefront D and E
See attached spec. Please note that this panel is in addition to insul. glass panel
as needed for energy requirements.
13. Confirm whether the existing HVAC concrete pad is adequate for the new equipment, or if new
concrete pads will be required?
The new HVAC units are larger than existing so new concrete pads will be
required.
14. Clarify whether we are required to install new backer board behind the wall tile as part of the
scope of work.
Please include replacing the backer board behind the wall tile in the contract.
15. Confirm whether repairs to the existing building stone are required?
No existing stone masonry repairs are anticipated. Please include a soft cleaning
near the end of the project to improve appearance.
16. Could you provide the Fire Extinguisher layout for all the buildings?
The fire extinguishers are only being replaced in the Rest Area building. The fire
extinguishers in the other buildings are existing to remain.
17. Who is providing Temporary Power, Water & heating facilities?
The site will be closed to the public. Utilities that are existing may be used by the
GC to the extent possible. Otherwise, other temporary power, water, etc. is to be
provided by the GC.
18. The aluminum louvered fence panels only come in horizontal configurations, but the
specs show the Louver fencing system is vertical configurations. Please Confirm.
The fencing that faces the existing sidewalk and the parking will be vertical panels
and the horizontal louvered sections face the interstate.
19. Are there any Sitework testing required as per NCDOT during construction.
The only construction testing anticipated is for concrete. This testing will be
handled by the Resident Engineer.
20. Based on the demolition drawings, a sanitary napkin disposal unit is shown in the family
restroom. However, in the new rest area planning drawings, a replacement unit is not indicated.
Please confirm whether a new sanitary napkin disposal unit is to be provided and installed in the
family restroom
Please provide a new sanitary napkin disposal in the family restroom. See N in
the toilet accessory schedule.
Rest Area:
21. The RCP doesn’t show ceiling heights. Detail 18/A1.5 scales to 8’-0” and the bathroom elevations
scale to 9’-0”. Please confirm ceiling heights.
The existing ceiling height is approximately 8’-4”. The site is currently open to the
public and a site visit is recommended.
22. Detail 2/A1.2: Does the Waterproofing apply to all tile floor and wall areas, or just the restrooms
for the wall portion?
This detail applies to the floors and walls in all the restrooms.
23. Per Section 09300 Tile:
a) It appears we are to figure floor prep. This would have to be an estimate until we determine
exactly what must be done.
The contract price is fixed not an estimate.
b) Are we sure this existing tile isn’t on a mortar bed? I know a lot of Rest Areas are on a mortar bed
installation.
The existing drawings from the original construction list the tile as thin-set.
24. Section 09300 lists Laticrete as Basis of Design, however it says Mapei will be considered. If the
products we plan to use meet or exceed ANSI specs. do we need to pre-submit for approval?
If the setting products, meet the specifications and are single sourced, they will be
considered.
25. The plans show Schluter trims to be Satin Aluminum. However, 09300 2.6 B. shows all to be
Stainless Steel. There is a tremendous amount of price difference from Aluminum to Stainless
Steel, please verify.
Please provide the Schluter trims as Aluminum.
26. We assume the Rest Area is a complete shut down and all work to be in one phase, correct?
Yes, all buildings on the site will be closed to the public. Property and contents
may still be accessed by staff. The ‘existing to remain’ sections of the project are
to be protected from damage and unused by GC unless approved by engineer.
27. The plans call for 1/8” grout lines on all tiles but some tiles shown recommend 3/16” grout lines.
We will follow the manufacture’s recommendations, correct?
Correct. We will follow all manufacturer’s recommendations but require the grout
joints be as narrow as possible.
28. Please confirm the bathroom walls with two colors of tile will grout all in the same color, or if there
will be two grout colors.
For pricing purposes, please include as if each tile spec’ed could have it’s own
grout color. For clarity, the Best Tile, Vermont Cream with Craft tile above is the
small dash pattern in the restrooms. The small to medium dash pattern in the
lobby is the Cocoon by Caesar.
WELCOME CENTER:
29. Does this mean we should figure doing this work outside of normal work hours?
No, the site is closed to the public. Normal business hours will be acceptable.
30. There is no specific tiles listed for the Welcome Center. Is the new Airlock tile to try and
match existing? This will most likely not be possible.
The floor tile in the Welcome Center airlock and foyer is to be the same as the
floor tile in the rest area building. See # 8 above.
31. We assume the will be patching of existing here where the old Air lock is removed, correct?
Again, a match may not be available.
This floor area will become carpet tile to match existing. This carpet is fairly
new and should be able to be matched. The drywall walls and ceiling to be
patched and repaired. The building is open to the public and a site visit is
recommended.
32. The plans include details for the outdoor signage at the Welcome Center; however, the
signage is not shown or specifically called out on any of the plan sheets. Please confirm.
Dimensional letters spelling “WELCOME CENTER” to be placed over new entry.
OTHER
• Extent of Removal: Please clarify the exact limits of the existing stamped concrete removal. Does the
scope require the demolition and removal of all existing stamped concrete in this area, or just specific
sections?
All shaded areas shown on G0.2 are existing stamped concrete and should be
removed and replaced with a typical concrete per 2/G0.2. The only remaining
stamped concrete should be at the ramp in front of the rest area between the
stone walls.
• Replacement Finish & Motif: For the new concrete, are we required to match the existing stamped finish
(including the star motif), or should the replacement simply be a standard broom finish?
The new concrete will not be stamped or stained. There will not be a star.
The new sidewalk finish will be brushed to provide a durable slip-resistant finish.
The sidewalk shall not hold water or allow ponding. It may have a maximum
cross-slope of 2%. Control joints and expansion joints will be placed as needed.
• Color Specifications: If the replacement concrete is to be stamped, please provide the approved color
scheme, including any specifications for integral color and release.
The new concrete will not be stained.
Clarification is needed regarding the restroom building finish on Sheet A1.2. The Finish Schedule
indicates paint on all walls in the men's and women's toilet rooms, but Sheet A1.5 elevations show a tile
finish on the walls. I would like direction on which finish is correct.
The area above the tile is to be painted per the schedule.
A note on the plans states that the Welcome Center building will remain open during construction. Can
you advise the hours it will be open?
No, the site is closed to the public.
Since there is no mention of the restroom or vending buildings, should we assume they will be closed to
the public during construction?
The entire site is closed to the public.
