The Maryland Professionals and Volunteer Firefighter Innovative Cancer Screening Technologies Program (Program), implemented by the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control, offers grant funding for local fire departments and volunteer fire companies to procure innovative cancer screening tests that are not otherwise conducted during routine physical examinations or covered by insurance to professional and volunteer firefighters (per Health General Article ยงยง 13-4001-13-4007, Annotated Code of Maryland) Each year, up to 20% of the program funds could be used to support research to assess, maximize, and improve the effectiveness and clinical utility of cancer screening funded by the program. The Program intends to provide research planning grants to multiple Maryland research centers to identify the best approach to implementing the research in subsequent fiscal years.
