Reduction Gear Tech Services USCGC Sequoia (WLB-215)

CGC Sequoia experienced a reduction gear casualty pier side resulting in their Generator pinion failing as well as their PTO shaft breaking in multiple places.

1.0 GENERAL

    1. Background

While conducting propulsion checks, cutter engineers heard an unusual noise in the engine room. Upon further inspection, personnel noticed some light smoke and the smell of burnt rubber but no active smoking. Further testing resulted in a loud bang and shudder as the PTO shaft for the thruster generator snapped. Upon further investigation it appears the PTO snapped in two locations and the generator pinion shaft snapped as well.

1.2 SCOPE

The scope of this work is on the USCGC Hickory and involves inspection of the current state of The Main Reduction Gear after a casualty of the PTO shaft. Casualty severed the Generator Pinions flanged shaft. The inspection and examination are further detailed below and will be adjusted in “real time” by agreement of both PG Tech Rep on scene as well as the USCG Inspector. Factors that will dictate performance of tasks based on priority (actions leading to Cutter being repaired an operational ASAP), feasibility of task at this early stage, tasks that will reveal indicators of cascading damage (additional repairs), as well as consumption of Man-days/hours purchased.

1.3 OBJECTIVE

The objective of this is to provide technical oversite of CG Yard technicians in support of removing the turning gear assembly and Generator pinion shaft to provide more clear inspection of reduction gear and Turning Gear

MFR ID 96-DHCMGH-CP

B Class Model Gear Unit Reduction: NSN 3020-XF-C11-6019

Input RPM 900 Output RPM 254

Gear ration 3.541:1

2.0 SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS/TASKS

The contractor shall provide equipment which meets the following performance requirements:

2.1. General Inspection of the PTO connection to the Main Reduction Gear. Assessment actions required to assist USCG in being knowledgeable of all repair options including mandatory, prudent, as well as optional.

a. Identify the amount of disassembly and forensics that can be accomplished on the Pinion Generator Shaft Assembly now during this visit. Purpose is to get any advance warning of cascading damage to bull gear.

b. Inspect bull gear teeth available (without turning gear being used).

c. Determine when in repairs the turning gear can be safely used to allow fuller tooth inspection and contact patterns (e.g. now or after Pinion generator repairs/renewals)

d. Any evidence of external housing damage e.g. carks, distortions.

e. Internal inspections of PTO Generator pinion Assy. The bearings, pinion shaft, and seals will be renewed outright:

  • the PTO shaft (generator pinion) Part: 50365-3041

  • Turning Gear/Generator Pinion Bearing: DWG 01070-0353 Item 74; Philadelphia Gear Corporation P/N 31000-1795

  • Turning Gear/Generator Pinion Bearing: DWG 01070-0353 Item 75; Philadelphia Gear Corporation P/N 31000-1796

  • Turning Gear/Generator Pinion Bearing: DWG 01070-0353 Item 76; Philadelphia Gear Corporation P/N 31000-0224

  • Turning Gear/Generator Pinion Bearing: DWG 01070-0353 Item 77; Philadelphia Gear Corporation P/N 31000-0223

  • Identify any other parts that may need ordering, inspection, or renewal.

f. Identify the steps to rebuild the generator pinion shaft (at later stage of project). Also steps to recommission the entire MRG. As well as steps to achieve shore operational tests (clutched in) and sea trials.

g. Identify if the bolt on turning gear required any repair work (due to consequences of casualty).

h. Identify and perform other prudent heal assessments of the Main Reduction Gear that may reveal at this advance point any signal of cascading damage. This may involve inspection cover removals, borescope inspection, tooth contact, etc.

2.2. The PTO shaft itself and Vulkan coupling will be renewed as corrective actions. America Vulkan designed and delivered the PTO shaft from MRG connecting flange though the bulkhead seal and connecting to the Thruster Generator. Those items can be observed for “big picture” view of casualty but not the focus of this visit.

2.1 Delivery
