COMMUNITY RATING SYSTEM (CRS) AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES

The City of Fort Pierce, Florida is located in St. Lucie County, with an estimated population of 52,000 residents.  Fort Pierce is the second largest city in St. Lucie County. The National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) was implemented in 1990 as a voluntary program for recognizing and encouraging community floodplain management activities exceeding the NFIP’s minimum standards, flood insurance rates which are calculated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) NFIP, are determined in part by the work that each community does to reduce the effects of flooding in the community.  The CRS uses a Class Rating system that is similar to fire insurance rating to determine flood insurance premium reductions for residents.  The CRS Class Ratings are rated from 10 (no premium reduction) to 1 (45% premium reduction).  Each class rating improvement accounts for an additional 5% premium reduction.
