CO NP MEVE 201(1) CEDAR TREE TOWER ROAD AND PARKING



PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Project improvements are within Mesa Verde National Park in Cortez, Colorado. This resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation (3R) roadway, parking lot, and lagging wall improvement project spans spanning across 11 locations in Mesa Verde. The elevations range from 6954 to 8062-feet. The project has one Schedule A (4.7 miles total) and Option X (0.2 miles).

SCOPE OF THE WORK: The 11 identified project locations and proposed improvements are as follows:



Schedule A Improvements:




  1. Route 0010 (Main) Entrance Road:


    1. Road Improvements: Begins at the roundabout and ends at Morefield Ranger Station. Pavement preservation includes crack seal, chip seal, fog seal existing paved shoulders, and striping, including a passing lane where it was left out previously.

    2. Retaining Wall Improvements: Remove and replace damaged timber lagging and existing steel soldier pile retaining wall, at 8 identified locations as shown in the contract drawings, and as directed by the Contracting Officer. Cut and remove damaged portions of existing steel soldier piles. Install splice plates and new steel members to restore structural integrity. Replace timber lagging in affected areas to match existing dimensions.



  2. Route 0205 Cedar Tree Tower Road: FDR and widening the roadway to include two 9-foot lanes with 1-foot shoulders and adding 5 parallel parking spaces along the teardrop and edge of the roadway. Adjacent to the parking spaces will be curb and sidewalk as well as an ABA curb ramp. Provide culvert lining to preserve the existing 18-inch culverts, with no impacts to the historic headwalls. All work will remain on the existing bench due to environmental constraints.

  3. Route 0210 Far View Ruins (Site) Road: FDR and widening the roadway slightly to include two 9-foot lanes with 1-foot shoulders and adding 12 parallel parking spaces on the north side of the roadway into the teardrop. Adjacent to the parking spaces will be curb and sidewalk as well as an ABA curb ramp. Construct a concrete pad adjacent to the parking spaces to house the existing portable toilets. Provide culvert lining to preserve the existing 24-inch culverts, with no impacts to the historic headwalls. All work will remain on the existing bench due to environmental constraints.

  4. Route 0200 Wetherill Mesa Road: Begins at Mesa Top Ruins Road extending north to the far edge of 0912BZ Far View Terrace Parking B (Loading Dock). Full depth reclamation (FDR), adding 4-inch asphalt pavement and removing and replacing an existing 24-inch culvert. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  5. Route 0404 Far View Residence Road: FDR the roadway from the intersection with Mesa Top Ruins Road to 0912AZ Far View Terrace Parking A. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  6. Route 0912AZ Far View Terrace Parking A: Pulverize the existing parking area and add 4-inch asphalt pavement. Restripe existing parking stalls, all diagonals. Protect east islands in place, remove and pave area of west islands. Install ABA stalls on the NNW corner of the lot and redo existing sidewalk to match ABA requirements. Install a 10-foot wide concrete bus pad along the sidewalk in front of the Far View Terrace Café. Remove all concrete curb and gutter throughout the parking area and replace with 6-inch concrete curb. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  7. Route 0912BZ Far View Terrace Parking B (Loading Dock): FDR, remove and replace existing 24” culverts and adding a concrete pad for the dumpster. Add a valley pan from the dumpster pad to the culvert to help drainage reach the existing culvert. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  8. Route 0925 Side Headquarters and Post Office Parking: Pulverize existing roadway, add geogrid, add Asphalt Pavement Patching, Type 2 to the first half of the alignment and install a 4-inch asphalt pavement overlay to the other half. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  9. Route 0918 Visitor Center Parking (Far View Center Parking Lot): Pulverize the existing parking area and add 4-inch asphalt pavement on top of the existing concrete. Construct new road connection between the north side of this parking area and RTE 0200 Wetherill Mesa Road. This connection will replace the existing picnic area that is no longer in use. This will have a pavement section of 4-inches of asphalt concrete pavement over 6-inches of roadway aggregate, method 2 and will match the existing slopes as close as possible.



Option X Improvements:




  1. Route 0409A Stone House Roads A: Rehabilitate the existing asphalt up to the garage, clearing any vegetation in the asphalt up to the existing stone curbs. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.

  2. Route 0409B Stone House Roads B: Rehabilitate the existing asphalt up to the garage, clearing any vegetation in the asphalt up to the existing stone curbs. All work will remain in the existing footprint and no alterations will be made to the horizontal or vertical alignment.
