Johnson Street Bridge Replacement and Public Utilities Relocation

The Johnson Street Bridge Replacement Project will replace the existing aging bridge over the C-10 Canal with a modern structure that improves safety, reliability, and long-term resiliency for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. The project is near construction readiness following completion of regulatory coordination, and risk-reduction efforts. Construction will be performed in a constrained urban corridor with active traffic and adjacent waterways, requiring effective maintenance of traffic, environmental controls, and phased construction sequencing.

A key element of the project is the relocation and protection of City-owned water and wastewater utilities that currently conflict with the proposed bridge footprint. The City intends to deliver the bridge replacement and utility relocations under a single construction contract, allowing the selected contractor to manage means and methods, minimize service interruptions, and reduce schedule and interface risk between structural and utility work.

The City is seeking experienced Florida-based heavy civil and bridge contractors with demonstrated success on bridge replacements, urban utility relocations, and work over waterways. The Johnson Street Bridge Replacement is a locally funded City priority project, advancing in close coordination with Florida Department of Transportation design review standards and permitting requirements. While FDOT is not the primary construction funding source, the project has been developed to align with FDOT criteria to preserve eligibility for future state participation and to ensure compliance with recognized best practices for bridge delivery, CEI oversight, and maintenance of traffic. The project has also achieved key regulatory milestones, including issuance of permits by Broward County (Environmental Resource License) and Conceptual Approval from the South Florida Water Management District.
