Summary

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed Project Firstline to address gaps in infection prevention and control knowledge and practice in healthcare settings. Set up as a collaborative, Project Firstline works with a diverse partner network, including state health departments like the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), to develop content that helps healthcare workers understand, think critically about, and apply infection control actions. ODH has been awarded funds to support Project Firstline initiatives and the Bureau of Infectious Diseases Healthcare-Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance Program has been leading these activities.

The main objective of this project is to provide engaging, innovative, and effective infection prevention and control training and materials for frontline healthcare workers in healthcare facilities and students in medical and health sciences colleges and universities. Content should be designed so it can be used and understood regardless of the healthcare worker or student’s previous training or educational background.

ODH will establish contracts with two accredited Ohio colleges or universities that provide academic medical education or education for health sciences (e.g., nursing) to provide infection prevention and control education to frontline healthcare workers in healthcare facilities and students in medical and health sciences programs with a focus on developing and disseminating Project Firstline training and materials. The intent is to provide education and training to help reduce or eliminate the spread of infectious diseases and healthcare-associated infections in Ohio healthcare facilities.
