Standardized Patient Services

The State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University (SUNY-DHSU), on behalf of its College of Medicine (COM), seeks an educational service organization to provide under a three year contract, inter alia, specially trained standardized patients (SPs) to act as patients in simulated visits with first, second and third-year medical students, and provide feedback on communication, history taking and physical exam (PE) skills so as to prepare such students for their local and national clinical skills exams.

The selected Vendor must be an established entity capable of organizing and carrying out assessments of medical students using standardized patients (SPs) who act as simulated patients (e.g., Observed Standardized Clinical Encounters –OSCE’s). All SP medical student encounters will take place at Downstate.

The selected Vendor should:

Have at least 5 years of experience with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical schools in recruiting and training SP’s, medical simulation, and familiarity with the USMLE Step 2CS type exam. Should be capable of providing guidance to medical school faculty as they integrate SP cases into formative and summative assessments throughout the medical school curriculum.

Have on staff a professionally recognized Medical Doctor with at least 5 years of experience in SP programming, USMLE Step 2 CS type activities, teaching and assessing physical diagnosis and communication skills.

Have several years’ experience in writing cases and developing checklists.

Have capability to develop a quality control program to ensure quality of SP performance and assess inter-relater reliability.

Have staff experienced in SP training and supervision capable of carrying out above activities including orientation of students, proctoring, selection and training of SPs, etc.
