DESCRIPTION: US 421 (Carolina Beach Road) from Antoinette Drive to
Approximately 200 feet North of Willoughby Park Road
SUBJECT: Pavement and Subgrade Investigation Report
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit has completed the evaluation of the pavement and
subgrade investigation for this project and presents the following.
The proposed work consists of widening the existing roadway and adding curb and
gutter.
The subgrade beneath the existing roadway consists of roadway embankment and Coastal
Plain soils. Soil types encountered were fine sand (A-3), silty sand (A-2-4) and lesser
amounts of sandy silt (A-4) and sandy clay (A-6).
Anticipated borrow will likely consist of fine sand (A-3) and silty sand (A-2-4).
The length of this project is 0.492.
The existing pavement is generally in good condition with low severity longitudinal and
transverse cracking present.
