The Air Force Memorial (AFM) requires replacement of one (1) granite inscription panel on the South Inscription Wall at the southern end of the AFM Plaza. The far west panel is to be replaced with a new granite panel that matches the existing granite in terms of size, cut angle, depth, format, and letter font. The replacement panel will feature corrected and updated text, replacing the exiting engraved text . existing panel is made of Absolute Black Granite, measuring approximately 90 inches in length, 70.5 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth. The replacement panel must be an exact match, using Absolute Black Granite matching the other existing panel (located side by side to the panel requiring replacement). The replacement panel must be a continuous panel with no joints or adjoined pieces to ensure a consistent and uniform appearance with existing panels. Matching the panels exactly is critical to prevent any discernible color variations and provides for consistency in the inscription font.
The AFM currently has 2 granite signs in place that used specific granite procured through the contractor, Lorton Stone, LLC. The contractor has residual granite slabs left from the original project that will serve as an exact match to the current project. Additionally, the contractor created custom font on this project and retained the font graphics in queue for future use. The project is highly visual since Generals and other distinguished individuals frequent the site. The granite signs need to be replaced due to original errors and additional engraving (text information added) needed on the signs.
