  • Summary:Description

As a Certified Local Government (CLG), the City of Williamsburg is partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to undertake a series of tasks in an effort to better educate property owners and encourage citizens to champion historic preservation opportunities. This contract work will include the development of varied platforms to help educate and highlight the importance in keeping historic preservation in the forefront when undertaking changes and alternations to structures within applicable districts.

    SUMMARY & BACKGROUND
    Background

In 2024, the City of Williamsburg and the Architectural Review Board updated the Architectural Review Guidelines. As part of the update, property owners in applicable districts were mailed postcards informing and inviting them to upcoming meetings. Postcards were mailed to more than 12,000 recipients. More than ten (10) meetings were held; however, despite all efforts, the city was unable to garner the enthusiasm and positive interest in the new guidelines as desired.

The new guidelines provide more flexibility in the use of substitute materials in certain districts, a broader selection of approved colors in commercial areas, and offers distinction in requirements for contributing versus non-contributing structures. These key changes should be clear and easily understood by property owners and citizens to make for an effortless review process and to avoid the review of after-the-fact work. A broader goal is an informed citizenry that is aware of their role in fostering community character and placemaking and spurring economic development through historic preservation
