Background

Lyonia Preserve which borders the Deltona Library property is a joint project of Volusia County, the Volusia County School Boards and the State of Florida to provide environmental education to the public and restore and maintain habitat for scrub-dependent species, including threatened scrub jay and gopher tortoise. The preserve, named after the scrub plant rusty lyonia, consists of 360 acres of restored Florida scrub habitat.

Volusia County intends to construct an elevated ADA accessible pedestrian boardwalk bridging the Deltona Library at Amphitheater sidewalk on the east to the trailhead pavilion of the Lyonia Preserve to the west over a total grade change of approximately 8 feet. The construction does NOT occur within the preserve. However, gopher tortoises have been discovered within the construction area which the County will be relocating prior to construction mobilization.
