DESCRIPTION OF WORK
SUMMARY
This project consists of trail pavement rehabilitation intended to improve the serviceability and
ride quality of the shared multi-use paved trail within the city. (see attached maps of the
project area). The trail segments identified for work have experienced surface deficiencies
primarily in the form of surface cracking and minor to major raveling. The trail pavement will
require crack filing, asphalt removal and patching or infrared patching.
The trail segment is a component of the City of Monticello paved trail system, a heavily-used
route for trail users of all recreation types: walking/hiking/running, dog-walking, biking,
rollerblading, commuting, and roller skiing. For these reasons, the Contractor must pay careful
attention to the requirements for safety, maintenance of traffic, and approved work times, as
referenced throughout the Contract Documents.
The contractor shall only close the trail segment that is actively being worked on. The contrac-
tor shall submit to the City a schedule of the intended closure dates of the trail segments one
week prior to commencing work to allow the City's Communication Department to properly no-
tify the public.
The contractor shall not change the dates of closure once submitted (excluding delays due to
weather-related events). The contractor shall install temporary construction signage as neces-
sary and as determined by the City. No substitutions will be allowed.
PRESERVATION OF EXISTING FEATURES
The Contractor shall minimize disruption and damages to existing Project Site features,
including but not limited to lawns, trees, existing topography, pavements, and curbing. All
construction access and traffic shall be confined to the routes indicated on the Drawings or by
the project Engineer. Any damages to Project Site features outside the specified routes shall be
repaired and restored by the Contractor to the satisfaction of the City of Monticello at no cost
to the City of Monticello.
The Contractor and City of Monticello shall create a photo inventory of pre-construction
conditions of the Project Site for later use in determination of changed conditions.

TRAIL CRACK AND SURFACE RESTORATION PROCEDURES
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This specification outlines the procedures and material requirements for repairing
cracks and surface damage in bituminous trail pavement. The goal is to restore
structural integrity, prevent water infiltration, and extend the life of the trail. All work
shall be performed in accordance with applicable standards and project drawings.
The contractor is responsible for ensuring that all materials and methods meet the
criteria described herein. Alternative methods may be proposed for review and ap-
proval by the project engineer or owner.
1.2 MATERIALS
A. All crackfilling and surface restoration shall utilize approved bituminous products.
The primary sealant shall be Crafco Asphalt Rubber Plus #34241, or an equivalent
product approved by the engineer. Sealant must be compatible with existing
pavement and capable of maintaining flexibility in varying weather conditions.
For infrared patching, hot mix asphalt shall conform to local specifications and be
suitable for blending with existing bituminous material. Tack coat materials shall
meet MnDOT standards for bonding new and existing surfaces.
1.3 CRACK REPAIR BY WIDTH
A. Cracks Measuring Between 14 Inch and 12 Inch
* Non-Transverse Cracks: These shall be sealed without routing. Sealant is applied
directly into the crack and finished flush using a squeegee. Overbanding shall not
exceed 1/16 inch in thickness or 2 inches in width.
* Transverse Cracks: These shall be routed to a depth and width of 38 to 12 inch
prior to sealing. The routed channel shall be filled with sealant and finished flush
with the surrounding pavement.
B. Cracks Measuring 1 Inch or Greater
* Cracks exceeding 1 inch in width require mastics repair. The process includes:
Cleaning surface of debris and vegetation.
o
Meets ASTM specification D8260 Type 1
o
Mastic is a heavy -duty pliable asphalt blend. It's designed to seal and re-
o
pair large crack up to 1 inch wide.
Mastic can also be used on alligator cracking.

1.4 CRACKFILLING
A. Crackfilling is intended for linear cracks that do not require full-depth excavation. The
procedure includes:
* Cleaning cracks of debris, vegetation, and moisture using compressed air or
mechanical brushing.
* Heating and applying sealant using a direct pour or pressure-fed wand system.
* Finishing the sealant flush with the pavement using a squeegee.
* Applying 1-ply paper or a cure solution over the treated area to prevent tracking
and promote curing.
B. The contractor shall ensure that all sealed areas are safe for pedestrian and bicycle
traffic before reopening the trail.
1.5 INFRARED HEATING REPAIR
A. Infrared heating repair is used for localized areas of severe cracking or surface
deformation. The process includes:
1. Surface Preparation: Cleaning the area of debris and moisture.
2. Heating: Using infrared equipment to soften the bituminous surface.
3. Scarification: Loosening the softened material with a rake or similar tool.
4. Material Addition: Adding hot mix asphalt as needed and blending with existing
material.
5. Compaction: Compacting the blended material to achieve a flush, uniform
surface.
B. No excavation is required unless directed by the city. The underlying structure shall
consist of the existing bituminous mat, engineered base, and compacted subgrade.
All waste shall be removed, and the repaired area must be safe and visually
consistent with adjacent trail sections.
