Title: Cemetery Survey Update
Addenda: 0
Release Date: 10/10/2025
Due Date: 11/10/2025
Beaufort County is looking to update the 1999 St. Helena Cemetery Survey. The current cemetery survey consists of about 50 sites located on St. Helena Island; however, through discussions with elders of the island, it was discovered that about half a dozen of unnamed sites exist that were not previously recorded. Most of the sites are easy to locate; however, some are smaller and harder to find. The update of the 1999 survey will consist of community meetings, locating all known burial sites, a reconnaissance recording all known burial sites through photographs, descriptions of any identifiable markers, and summary of any cultural affiliations, and working with the County's GIS department to define to coordinates of the sites. Please note that this work, especially public meetings and discussions with the residents, will be completed in collaboration with, and with administrative assistance of, Beaufort County's Planning Department and Queen Quet of the Gullah Geechee Nation.
The scan of the previous survey map can be hard to decipher so the County has created a replica with the new updated known sites. Both are attached. Also note that a clearer version of the 1999 survey can be accessed through the Beaufort Historical Foundation's office. Photos from that have been attached as well.
