Overview
The City of Pontiac is soliciting proposals from qualified contractors to provide the removal, replacement, repair, and installation of roadway guardrail systems and bridge abutment crash attenuators at various locations throughout the City under a multi-year, on-call unit price contract. The City seeks a contractor capable of furnishing all labor, equipment, materials, traffic control, and associated restoration necessary to maintain and improve roadway safety infrastructure in accordance with current Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) standards and specifications.
The scope includes removal and replacement of existing W-beam guardrail systems, guardrail terminals, bridge anchorages, and crash attenuators; installation of new MASH-compliant safety hardware; temporary traffic control; excavation and restoration; and repair or reset of damaged attenuator systems when replacement is not required. All work must comply with MDOT Standard Specifications, applicable MDOT Standard Plans, AASHTO MASH requirements, MMUTCD traffic control standards, and any applicable Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) requirements.
The City of Pontiac maintains an extensive network of roadways, bridges, and transportation infrastructure that require ongoing maintenance and periodic replacement of roadside safety features. Guardrail systems and crash attenuators are critical components of the City's transportation safety network, helping to protect motorists from roadside hazards, bridge abutments, fixed objects, and other potential collision points. Over time, these systems may become damaged due to vehicle impacts, weather exposure, age-related deterioration, or changing roadway safety standards.
To ensure public safety and maintain compliance with current transportation design standards, the City intends to establish an on-call contract that provides a streamlined method for completing guardrail and crash attenuator repairs and replacements whenever conditions warrant. Because the quantity and location of future work cannot be accurately predicted, the City is utilizing a unit-price procurement approach that allows work to be ordered as needed over the contract term.
