BID SPECIFICATION
Exterior Wood Cleaning, Preparation and Staining
Ridgefield Recreation Center
195 Danbury Road
Ridgefield, Connecticut
1. GENERAL
The Town of Ridgefield is requesting sealed bids from qualified painting contractors for the
complete preparation and staining of all exterior wood siding, trim, exposed beams and related
wood components at the Ridgefield Recreation Center.
The intent is to restore and protect all exterior wood surfaces while maintaining the existing
appearance of the facility.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
The Contractor shall furnish all labor, supervision, materials, equipment, lifts, tools, safety
equipment and incidentals necessary to complete the project.
The work shall include, but not necessarily be limited to:
Surface Preparation
Contractor shall:
Inspect all exterior wood surfaces.
Pressure wash all wood surfaces using environmentally safe cleaning products suitable
for wood siding.
Remove dirt, mildew, mold, oxidation and loose stain.
Light sand weathered areas and raised grain.
Scrape all loose or failing stain.
Feather all transition areas.
Mask and protect windows, doors, roofing, masonry, landscaping, lighting fixtures and
adjacent surfaces.
Repairs
Prior to staining, contractor shall inspect for:
rotten wood
deteriorated trim
damaged siding
loose boards
failed fasteners
Repairs are not included in the base bid.
Contractor shall submit written documentation of any repairs required.
The Town may:
authorize repairs by change order,
perform repairs separately,
or eliminate repairs.
Provide unit pricing with the bid for:
Carpenter
Painter
Laborer
Hourly rates shall include overhead and profit.
Staining
Existing finish is believed to be solid stain. Contractor shall verify
compatibility with proposed new finish.
Apply two (2) complete coats of premium exterior solid-color
stain. Approved products:
Sherwin-Williams WoodScapes Exterior Acrylic Solid Color Stain
Sherwin-Williams WoodScapes Exterior Latex Stain
Approved equal
Color shall match the existing building.
Color sample shall be approved by the Town prior to application.
Application methods may include:
brush
spray and back-roll
brush and roll
Final finish shall be uniform with no holidays, lap marks, runs or overspray.
Metal Components
Clean, prepare and repaint:
exposed steel braces
metal end caps
miscellaneous painted metal associated with the building exterior
Finish shall consist of:
surface preparation
primer where required
two finish coats of Sherwin-Williams DTM Acrylic or approved equal.
Protection
Contractor shall protect:
roofing
sidewalks
landscaping
vehicles
HVAC equipment
windows
lighting
playground
adjacent facilities
Plywood protection shall be used under ladders where work occurs over roofing.
Overspray shall not be permitted.
Site Cleanup
Contractor shall:
remove all masking
collect debris daily
dispose of waste legally
leave the site broom clean each workday
3. MATERIALS
Only premium commercial-grade coatings shall be used.
Products shall be new and unopened.
Contractor shall submit product data sheets before beginning work.
No substitutions shall be made without written approval.
4. EQUIPMENT
Contractor shall provide all necessary:
boom lifts
scissor lifts
ladders
scaffolding
fall protection
safety equipment
The Town will not furnish equipment.
5. WORK HOURS
Normal or extended work hours:
Monday–Friday 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Contractor shall insure public access to RRC facilities is unimpeded during work.
Weekend work requires prior written approval.
6. PROJECT SCHEDULE
Contractor shall begin work within 30 days of Notice to Proceed.
Substantial Completion: Within 20 calendar days, weather permitting.
7. QUALITY CONTROL
The Contractor shall:
