  • Summary:The proposed repairs of the John Lynch Bridge over the James River include replacing the current metal plate assembly expansion joints located at Piers 9 and 12 (NBL), Pier 15 (NBL & SBL), and Abutment C (NBL & SBL) with a strip seal expansion joints. The existing raised median located at the centerline of the bridge between Abutment A and Pier 12 will be replaced in its entirety along with a new longitudinal joint system. A shared use path is planned for the NBL with a 1’-0” parapet and railing system that will separate vehicular traffic from pedestrians and bicyclists. A pedestrian fence will be added to the existing downstream parapet adjacent to the planned shared use path. A sand epoxy overlay and concrete surface color coating will be placed on the top of the deck/raised medians and parapets, respectively. The structural steel members will be prepared, primed, and spot painted at the bearings. All of these repairs will take place within the limits of the bridge structure with no land disturbance anticipated for this project.
