Description
The City of Salmon Arm (City) is situated between the peaceful shores of Shuswap Lake and beautiful surrounding mountains and hills. It is comprised of a year-round population base of approximately 19,000 people, with a marked increase during the summer months, and offers an incredible diversity of economic and tourism-related amenities.
The purpose of this project is to examine the feasibility for constructing an at-grade crossing for active transportation users over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Railway near the Raven Subdivision at the northeast end of the City’s Foreshore Trail. The at-grade crossing would be constructed to improve public safety and create connectivity between northeast residential areas and the downtown core as well as connectivity to other trail networks within the City.
The City’s Foreshore/SABNES Trail (trail) is part of the City of Salmon Arm’s Greenways trail system. It is a multi-use seasonal trail that follows the eastern boundary of the Shuswap lake bay area. The trail provides wide paths, boardwalks, and a viewing platform for excellent bird watching in one of the province’s premier migratory estuaries.
The feasibility and preliminary design will determine the most advantageous crossing location to meet Transport Canada guidelines for pedestrian and active transportation at grade crossings.
