DPS operates forensic crime laboratories throughout the state and DPS personnel in those laboratories examine evidence from criminal investigations for state and local law enforcement agencies, including short tandem repeat (STR) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis. DPS’s crime laboratories receives more DNA evidence than it currently has the capacity to analyze, and a large backlog of cases has accumulated.
