Description
The Government of Alberta is committed to transforming the healthcare system to be culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive to the unique needs of Indigenous Peoples. Numerous engagements with Indigenous communities—First Nations, Métis, and Inuit—have revealed critical gaps in access to culturally safe care, and the need for enhanced cultural competency of health are providers when delivering trauma informed care, through an Indigenous lens.
Key observations include:
• Indigenous communities in Alberta have highlighted experiences of perceived racism in healthcare settings, often leading to fear or avoidance of care.
• This work builds on recommendations from Indigenous Modernization of Alberta’s Primary Health Care System (MAPS), specifically Recommendation #2: “Equip health care staff with the knowledge, skills, and conduct to create welcoming, compassionate, culturally safer spaces.”
• The Province has gathered extensive qualitative data from prior community engagement sessions and will make these materials available (under NDA) to the successful Proponent.
This project reflects a proactive approach toward addressing systemic barriers, improving Indigenous health outcomes, and fostering cultural responsiveness across Alberta’s healthcare system
