Description

PROJECT NUMBER: UT FLAP 73(2)

PROJECT NAME: La Sal Mountain Loop Road

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The UT FLAP 73(2), La Sal Mountain Loop Road Project is located approximately 8 miles southeast of Moab, UT in Eastern Utah. The project crosses through Utah State School and Institutional Trust Lands (SITLA), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), private, and United States Forest Service (USFS) lands, providing access to the Manti – La Sal National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands. The route is categorized as a major rural collector in mountainous terrain and is maintained by San Juan County.

This project rehabilitates and reconstructs the existing road with minor superelevation correction, profile adjustments, curve widening, ditch reconstruction, culvert replacements, asphalt surfacing, erosion control, signing, and pavement markings. The existing pavement is in poor condition with significant rutting, cracking, and potholing apparent along the route. To complete the proposed widening and realignment, rock and soil cuts and fills are expected. Due to the mountainous terrain, significant boulders and areas with noted seepage or soft subgrade will be encountered. The project consists of two segments, broken into Schedule A and Option X.

Segment 1 (Option X) – Segment 1 goes from the intersection of Old Airport Road 11+62 to 147+00 at the intersection of Pack Creek Cutoff. Rehabilitation and widening consists of pulverizing the existing pavement, widening the road to 30 feet from the beginning to 45+00 and 26 feet for the remainder of the road, placing aggregate base and asphalt concrete pavement, and drainage improvements.

Segment 2 (Schedule A) – Segment 2 goes from 147+00 at the intersection of Pack Creek Cutoff, and goes to 650+91, the boundary with the previous project UT PFH 46-1(2) and UT FLAP 73(1). Rehabilitation consists of pulverizing the existing pavement, placing new aggregate base leveling, asphalt concrete pavement, and drainage improvements to narrow the roadway width to 26 feet. Five locations will be reconstructed requiring raising or lowering profile, placing aggregate base, asphalt concrete pavement, and drainage improvements to widen the roadway width to 26 feet.
